Mastic
Mastic has been harvested since Greek Antiquity for some 2,500 years. it became internationally recognized in the 13th century on the island of Chios for its widely recognized benefits and properties. It was considered so precious that it was worth its weight in gold. Armies literally fought and killed for the right to control its cultivation and sale. During the Ottoman Empire, penalty for stealing mastic was execution by order of the sultan.
One of the earliest uses of mastic was as a chewing gum produced from the resin tears obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus tree. “Tears of Chios” as it is known. Hippocrates himself recorded the use of mastic tears for the prevention of digestive problems, colds and as a breath freshener.
Mastic has been used as an important medicine, in perfumery, cosmetics, wine making, specialty food preparation, chewing gum and as a varnish for centuries to this day.
Mastic has an affinity for the veins and is used in aroma-medicine primarily as a vein tonic, heart support, prostate decongestant and to help stop bleeding. Nothing works like Mastic for its ability to shrink hemorrhoids and varicose veins. Its astringent and cleansing properties are well recognized at helping firm skin, control acne, ameliorating spider veins and for oral hygiene.
The aroma of Mastic is fresh, green, earthy and herbal. Similar to Galbanum but not quite as intense. More balsamic. A really nice anchoring addition to many perfume blends for the perfumer.
Mastic is fortifying for the whole system and especially supportive during challenging times when one needs extra strength and endurance. It also has excellent natural antibiotic and antiinflammation properties making it a good addition in a fortifying yet soothing body massage oil blend. Mastic essential oil clears lungs, decongests sinuses and purifies the air when diffused. A must have during these times we’re in for sure. Blends well with many oils and worth its weight in gold!
