Spikenard
Spikenard is one of the ancient “biblical” oils. Along with Frankincense and Myrrh, It is mentioned in the bible more times than any other aromatic. Popular stories have been told of Mary Magdalene using Spikenard to anoint the feet of Jesus. This may or may not be true but the qualities of Spikenard would probably lend themselves very nicely to a soothing aromatic foot rub after a long day.
Coming from the Valerian family, Spikenard is comprised of predominately sedating constituents and is regarded by many as a natural botanical Vallium. For insomnia, applying a drop over the solar plexus works wonders. We like to blend it with Roman Chamomile & Lavender for this purpose but it’s just as effective on its own. The scent is quickly recognizable as coming from the Valerian family. Cats seem to go crazy for it so beware! We also suggest when using Spikenard for insomnia, not to exceed 2 drops, as using more than necessary seems to have a counter effect on some individuals.
Spikenard is a strengthening oil that is “grounding” with a particular affinity for the ovaries. It is also PH balancing and a fabulous addition to skin and hair care treatment blends. According to Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, Spikenard is one of the few oils that is truly effective against dandruff.
Use a slight hand and moderation when blending with this oil. Although I personally love the sweet dung-like scent of jatamansii, It can be a bit over-powering in some blends. Blends beautifully with Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Clary Sage & Mandarin!
